A friends daughter who has had this car from new and is having problems.
I asked her if the radiator/transmission cooler recall had been done and she didn't know.

It sure seems to me like the fluid looking like strawberry milkshake would be a big red flag! She noted that she had had to add a bit of coolant too.

Planet Saab are a usually pretty well respected Indy in San Francisco, so it seemed odd they didn't point right at this as a potential root cause.

What would you guys do. I was going to suggest just putting a used transmission in there (as well as the radiator!) and move on.
It doesn't feel like it's worth a rebuild for a car of this age. I think it's got 100K on it or less.

"here's the short update on the dear saab: planet saab was very helpful. Checked transmission fluid which had a strange "strawberry milkshake" appearance that he had never seen. Further diagnostic work up held off and we attempted to see if changing fluid would buy time to take closer look at transmission shop. Gearbox light turned off initially but just this weekend had recurrent problems, after mere 20ish miles SO planning to speak to Bryant transmission (planet saab rec) about general estimates and make decision from there"
