2007 9-3 SS 2.0T with 113k ...
Alright folks, I have a confluence of issues to throw at you.
The other day, while driving the car "bing bonged" at me and the SID reported a steering wheel lock malfunction and asked me to safely pull over. I cleared the alert from the SID and it didn't come back--I kept driving. Once safely parking at home, I tried removing the key and reinserting--steering lock works fine and the alert is still gone.
Meanwhile, I now notice that when I turn the key to the "on" position (just before starting), the SID reports "Check ok" but the check engine light stays illuminated. When I start the car, it goes out. Has never come on after the car has actually been started. I'm not sure when this began; I usually just turn the key straight from off to start, and since the light doesn't stay on, I haven't noticed. It doesn't normally stay illuminated before starting the car, right?
As for starting...
I have had several (1-2) occasions where, after starting (typically with a warm engine, after an hour+ of highway driving for instance), the car will start, rev to 1,000 or so RPM, and then sputter and die. I start it back up, give it a little gas for a second, and it seems to "catch" and is fine. Hasn't happened recently.
I feel I should also note that I have had 1 occasion where, after stalling the car (oops--trying not to hit another car while parking on a San Francisco hill with a manual), the car would not start. I turned the key to start, nothing. Flipped back and forth several times, then it started and was happy as clam. Hasn't happened again since--was a few months ago.
I have scoured the board for all these issues. I have found the following:
1. A faulty/failing battery could cause the CEL and/or the steering wheel lock malfunction warning
2. A bad or loose gas cap can cause the CEL
3. Poor quality gas can cause the odd start-sputter-die problem
Of course, I have no discernible performance impacts (accelerates smoothly, no other issues, gas mileage on the open highway is 32+).
Should I:
- replace the battery
- replace the gas cap (it doesn't lock or click like a normal cap should--says "faulty" to me!)
- run some fuel system cleaner through the next tank of gas?
- deliver the car to my indy and cross my fingers?
TIA!
Tim B.
