Timing Chain Question

G'day
Just looking for some advice. I have a 2003 9³ 2.0t ARC Sedan.
The car has done about 220km
The engine has a noticeable rattle coming from it which does not go away when it warms up.
My mechanic has informed me that it needs to have a new Timing Chain & Guides fitted.
He has also said that we should do the water pump at the same time since the engine will be open.
Just wanting to get some opinions on whether this actually is required and the likely issues that would arise if left unattended. I have read elsewhere that the timing chain should last "for the life of the engine".
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
