Thanks for checking in. In my case there isn't a lot of help, but I didn't have an issue with binding or being stiff. And the "before and after" when I had the selector out in the vise giving some tests didn't seem to show much tightening ("less slop") with the replaced metal bushing.
So, in the end it certainly isn't worse, and it may now not get worse due to the plastic bushing eventually wearing, but not improved either.
I am pretty certain that my issue is that I just need to do the alignment technique, but I can NOT get the plastic adjustment catch released on the shift cables (by putting a screwdriver in the slot and attempting to pry up and back on it as described in the service bulletin). I am really afraid I was going to break the plastic catch and I don't want to be stranded :-)
So, any advice on how to release that pesky catch on an 18 year old shift cable w/o breaking the plastic? Hopeful that maybe in the spring when it warms up it may be more pliable. But still worried it will snap.
