Just got back from the track tonight with my 9-3. (Yes I know Saabs aren't drag cars.) But I upgraded from 16" to 17" rims and wanted to check the straight-line acceleration impact (205/50/16 cheapo BFG's to 225/45/17 Pirelli PZero Asymetrico's ) and, with all conditions as equal as possible (temperature, track, driving style, fuel amount, tire pressure) with the exception of the addition of 5 gallons of 104 octane race gas, the 17" setup actually increased my 1/4 mile times by about 0.3-0.5 sec. My guess is that the extra weight of the larger wheel is responsible.

The biggest surprise was that those bigger softer tires that grip so wonderfully around turns didn't really improve my 60' times either.
