I don't know why a dealer would tell you that.
Saab has huge incentives on these cars now.
The sales rep may just be hedging his bet--thinking you are going to negatiate a better price--I know that's stupid, but car salespeople are still at the neanderthal stage thinking people are stupid, even though they pretend to be caring and empathetic and all that BS.
Call Saab and complain, or call the Owner of the dealership and ask him'her some questions, and let him know that you were told some bad information from the sales rep. These car sales reps are so temporary, they move from dealership to dealership--very few salespeople stay with their dealer-- Just tell the owner that you would really like to buy a Saab, but really need some assurances of fair and honest treatment if you buy from them.
Just try to squeeze even more out of them--there was one poster who suggested that he could get about 6-7000 off list. I can't recall if that was a 9-3 or 9-5.
I really can't think of a nicer car than the Saab 9 3 -- dark blue is just stunning in my opinion.
