The Volvo S40/V50 is a fine car. However, it is probably not a prudent recommendation for someone who is planning to have kids soon but who isn't yet used to living with child seats on a daily basis. The S40/V50 is cramped in the rear, and I could see someone really regretting it soon after their first kid graduates from an infant seat to a convertible seat.
Incidentally, my wife and I were rather disappointed with our test drives of the V50 T5 with sport suspension. It felt solid, but had zero fun factor. Even though the car rags tend to clock it faster than a Saab 9-3 SS 2.0T, my wife and I both thought the Volvo felt sluggish in comparison, both around town and on the highway, as if it were a much heavier car. The ride seemed stiff and uncomfortable, although perhaps that was the blame of the sport suspension. I wouldn't want to take a long trip in the V50 we tested. The "soul" of the V50 T5 seems very different from that of the Saab 9-3 2.0T. I can imagine someone loving either one and hating the other.
