Drew, this is what I meant. During steady operation (cruise, idle etc) the O2 sensor governs the mixture: Yes there is injection map, but the sensor adds or subtracts fuel to fine tune the mixture to compensate for atmospheric conditions, engine wear, quality of fuel etc. Under high throttle situations, the O2 sensor is ignored, as performance is the primary consideration. Heavy use of throttle on the street is very rare as you really cannot maintain full throttle for any appreciable length of time without being arrested or getting into a big accident. So my point is that regular or premium fuel will not have a measureable impact on fuel economy. Pinging at very low throttle situation is not to harmful. Pining is very destructive when you are at WOT and and high loads. At low throttle and low RPM loads on the engine are very low. Perhaps I am being penny wise, I'm monitoring the situation and will use higher octane if I feel the situation warrants.
