Mark:
It doesn't mean anything to me if you destroy your engine as a result of running cheap gas but here is what you wrote:
"Occasionaly on a hot day and certin conditions I will hear very minor pinging, but only when it's real hot and the engine is lugged." and,:
"I VERY rearly experience detonation underboost."
Guess what? I NEVER EVER experience detonation or pinging in my car because I don't run cheap gasoline in my car, and it's WAY hotter here in Houston than anyplace in Canada. Name a single date in the past 6 months when the averge temperature in Houston was cooler than anyplace in Canada over the same time period.
"No I don't think injecting extra fuel is on the cards, that is governed by the oxygen sensor readings."
Which is 100% wrong, as you later say, in direct contradiction to what you previously wrote:
"Richening the fuel is done for two reasons, cooling and a rich mixture also burns more slowly (it's less explosive) so it reduces EGTs and detonation. I VERY rarely experience detonation underboost."
Which is exactly what I've been trying to tell you, and exactly what you said wasn't "in the cards". There is no reason to EVER experience detonation in a properly maintained stock engine unless you're doing something that isn't recommended:
"Saab says my engine will tolerate reg."
TOLERATE is the important word there, tolerate does not equal NORMAL OPERATION.
Tolerate means "If you're out of gas someplace that doesn't have anything but regular, it's okay to fill your tank to get out of there so you can get some real gasoline." Under NORMAL OPERATION you aren't relying upon electronic intervention to save you from yourself. A wise man who owns a 9-3 uses the recommended fuel.
Like I said before, it's not an extremely poor decision to be penny wise and dollar foolish. Especially when considering melting your pistons.
