With a new engine, the oil change interval is not optimal for the engine. It is, in my opinion, the bare minimun. I change oil on a new engine at around 3 then 7K. A new engine is accumulating large amounts of wear metals in the oil that are too fine for the filters to remove. This metal content will cause accellerated wear of areas in the engine that do not have well developed fluid layer lubrication, such as camshaft lobes and piston rings. The accelerated wear then creates more wear metals. The only way to remove these is by draining the oil.
Fine wear metals also do act as catalysts for oxidation of engine oil and is considered one of the primary mechanisms of changing oil to sludge.
I changed the oil on my 9-5 Aero yesterday at 50K. The super magnet oil plug shows iron and steel that is captured that would otherwise circulate continously. This captured material is extremely fine. I use a PuroLator PureOne PL10214 filter that works better than most anything else. With a 2003+ engine you are probably stuck with the OEM paper insert filter.
