Shot at 500 miles???
Oil filters manufacturers could make a killing if this could be substantiated by telling you it's important to change your oil filter several times between oil changes.
Secondly, Honda's engineers must be over-paid and under-qualified since they recommend changing the thimble-sized oil filter every other oil change (20,000 miles) under normal service. Surely, this isn’t a typo in the manual.
"As for going into bypass", I think this happens a lot more frequently than people realize. Even on a warm summer day, your oil is more than twice as thick at start-up as it is under operating temps. My oil pressure is about 80psi at start up and about 20psi at warmed idle. So the resistants-to-flow is very obvious at start-up which means your filter is probably in by-pass until it thins out to the spec SAE grade.
Bypass thresholds typically fall between 10-20psi, which means cold "thick" oil is going to pop that bypass open every time you start the car in the morning, and even longer in the winter. And just imagine, our Saabs are lasting way past 200,000 miles!
