If your car is repaired at a reputable shop, it should be just as safe and strong as it was before your wreck. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have the car repaired at a good shop.
As to the question of whether it should be totalled.... I'd say you'd probably have to incur somewhere in the range of $16000 (??) in damage to the car in order for it to be totalled. From your description, I'm thinking it's going to be a close call, but I'd bet your insurer will total it because it was rolled (as your relative said).
If they do indeed total your car, remember that the settlment amount they offer you is somewhat negotiable. Have in your mind exactly how much it would take to replace your Aero with another one of the same year, options, etc., and be prepared to defend that amount to your insurer if they are lower than what you expect. I have seen '02 Aeros on dealer lots lately around $21K.
If they offer a higher settlement than what you expected (which is what happened to me in my wreck), it can still be worth it to say "Hmmm, I was expecting a little bit more," - for me, that resulted in an extra $2K in the settlement amount. Never hurts to try.
I'm happy that nobody was hurt! Let us know how it shakes out for you.
