Actually, you will probably find that once repairs get to the 75%-80%, your insurance company will probably want to total the car. Reason being that there may be damage that is hidden till repairs are well underway, for instance eng, tranny, or turbo problems that will be expensive to repair on top of structural damage.
I had an Isuzu Trooper that suffer approx $1000-$2000 damage to the rear, but rolled on its side (go figure my last high SUV). The car was totaled. Ins Co reasoned windows, doors, etc. would always be troublesome by not working correctly.
In the end, if they total it, I think your pretty much stuck with their decision.
