The 2.3L and other iterations are over 20 years old. The Japaneses and other European automakers offer more refined powerplants. I for one am a big fan of the 2.3L, but most reviews of Saabs, comment that the engine is either an aging design or it is not as "refined" as competitors in its class.
The 2.3L is good for 300K miles if, you pay attention to oil and service intervals; I don't think durability is an issue.
The 9-3 Combi, is our Hatchback from the past and should fill a market segment. That is one of the reasons I kept my 94 9000, it is the original Swiss Army Knife of autos. There is not anything I cannot haul or move in my 9000.
