I am having quite a time with a cooling system problem. Here are the

particulars:
- 2000, 9-5, 2.3t engine.
- I got a message on the SID to "Fill Coolant Liquid". This
happpened about 3 weeks ago.
- I looked for evidence of a leak and kept an eye on the temperature
gauge. I never saw any evidence of a leak and the temp guage
always stayed at the 9:00 o'clock position.
- I did check the level of coolant in the expansion tank, and I
read the Owner's Manual regarding this message. There was
nothing in the expansion tank. So, as instructed by the manual
I filled the expansion tank, when it was cold, with a 50/50
solution of coolant and water.
- I did not get the message for about an hour of driving. When I
did get the message, I was concerned. Again, I looked for
evidence of a leak and found nothing obvious. Nothing anywhere
in the engine compartment nor on the ground where ever I
parked, outside or in my garage.
- After getting the message several times, I again added more
coolant solution. After several times of this, and very early
in the morning, I was stopped at a traffic light and saw steam
coming out from under the hood and again the message. I
immediately pulled over and let the car sit and cool until it
was daylight. I then popped the hood and saw coolant all over.
It was very evident that it was coming from the expansion tank
cap. Time to call the pros.
- I called my mechanic and drove it to his garage, being very
watchful of the temperature guage. At no time did the guage
go anywhere higher than 9:00 o'clock.
- The mechanic had it for 3 days and found no leaks. The system
was pressurized, the car was driven, the coolant was drained and
refilled. On the 3rd day I was told that it was now working
correctly. No message and no steam!
- I took it and watched it all weekend. Lo and behold on Sunday,
I again got the message. I knew what was going on, so I
immediately pulled over and popped the hood. I expected to
see coolant everywhere. Well, there was none! The expansion
tank was empty. So, I cloed the hood and went on my way, again,
keeping an eye on the temp guage.
- Monday I called the mechanic and he said it was probably the
sensor! I told him to order one.
- After about a week and a half I checked back. Still not in.
Told him I was still getting the message. He said just watch
it, the temp guage.
- I read the Owner's Manual again, and was getting concerned that
the expansion tank was always empty when I checked it. So I
started filling it and then found that the message would not
appear for several trips and several hours of driving.
- Finally I found that the expansion cap was again spewing
coolant. I called the Mechanic again, and he said to bring it
in. I did and again he put the pressure tester on it. It held
the pressure for as long as he did the test, about 20 to 30 min.
- Again, no problem found. He told me to keep an eye on it.
- Again, after a day or two, more spewing of coolant from the cap.
I called the Mechanic and we discussed the possibility of the
cap being bad. He said that was a possibilty. So I got a new
cap.
- In no time, the cap was again spewing coolant. Oh, I had been
adding coolant solution as I thought it was needed.
So, if you have read this far, I am open to any and all suggestions, as I do

not know what to do next. I have watched the temperature guage and it has

never gone over 9:00 o'clock. I have gone through about 3 gallons of

solution, and am very concerned.

Thanks in advance for any help.
John
