I have the exact same problems with the temperature guage sticking at the 9:30 while the engine coolant is boiling and the coolant spewing from the cap. my mechanic changed the thermostat, and cap. and the same thing happened. temp guage at 9:30 and still over heating. i am not loosing coolant into the head as the oil is not milky. (check oil on dipstick or get the oil changed and ask to see the oil upon draining (if milky, you are loosing the coolant into the head).
I am still problem solving this issue with my mechanic, who i dont believe is too competetn. mechanic suggested possible water pump problems but it isnt leaking. so mechanic said maybe the impeller is loose and it doesnt get the water through the system. Or maybe the fans are not working.
At a minimum, i think you have a bad temperature sensor. cant tell you more yet, but we are in the same boat.
