Here's the underlying question: How much of the newer, extended oil change intervals due to marketing concern that new car owners (a) want lower maintenance and (b) won't be the owners when the engine eventually quits? How much is due to the (alleged) fact that there is no downside to longer intervals? I don't know the answer.
Over the phone some years ago, Mobil-1 engineers told me that the problem is not the oil (which can last 100K miles) but rather the ability of the oil filter to keep the oil clean after many miles. I asked them what they did for their personal cars. They said "7,500 miles".
My personal experience has been: Two Saab 9000Ts, one car with 254,000 miles, the other with 193,000 miles, both engines within factory spec for compression (as of 60 days ago), neither engine ever opened, both have had oil changes at 7500 intervals with Mobil-1 synthetic.
To each his own. Maybe I've been changing oil more often than necessary. To me, 7,500 mile intervals are cheap insurance.
