What does your central monitoring alarm company do if you are not paying for the service and they see your alarm is going off? What's my insurance company do if I don't keep my policy with them and then I go and burn my house down? This is capitalism, and I don't think any company that expects to survive will be able to monitor everyone who is driving around with equipment that can send a signal to them that hasn't expressed any desire to pay for it! If that were the case, then how long afterward do you think it would take for people to create bootleg transmitters, knowing they'll never have to pay for having a company essentially monitor their safety for free?

If the couple of hundred dollars a year (that many of the folks in that previous thread seemed to be so against) is not what you want to pay, then don't pay it -- but don't expect something for nothing! How many people buy and drive substandard cars for nothing more than financial reasons. Should everyone drive a Saab or Volvo, so everyone will be safer in an accident? Then should we all have to subsidize those that can't afford one or who refuse to buy one?

I've been using Onstar, am a bit saddened by the things it doesn't have that I thought it did (a la the door locks) but overall I think it is the face of things to come and I wish to be a part of it.

As you had mentioned in that thread, if GM/Saab wanted to pay for all of us, I'll be first in line to take it and thank them for it. If they don't supply it, though, I'll be re-upping next June, because I think it is worth it.

In fact, I'm more concerned of it not doing things I'm paying for, than worrying about what they'll do for me if I'm not paying.
