One final thought on this topic, then I for one will be toxic on this subject.

I will not rehash the debate regarding OnStar but for those who have not read past postings on this issue, I suggest you do so before you renew your subscription to this "service".

I too believe that GM/OnStar is acting quite irresponsibly with regard to the safety functions of this system and degrade the SAAB safety image greatly. They are using the same business model as drug dealers do: give them the drugs for free (though in our case we unwillingly/unwittingly paid for it)to get them addicted, then keep getting their money for life (or until your lease runs out!).

I will "kick the habit" after a year, and when they send me a renewal form I'll toss it in the trash. They will have to document that I declined the service before they "turn it off"; much the same as an insurer. I'll let THEM spend a few bucks this time as they send 2nd & 3rd notifications and registered letters. They better have a gaggle of lawyers or a big pot of cash to give away if they think they can just turn off the service without confirmed notification. Somebody with a bad outcome following an accident where the OnStar system was in range but did not function as EXPECTED by the driver will be able to get Johnny Cochran and Co. to subpeona 911 records and OnStar records and have a field day.

There is an easy solution. Offer continuous "air bag/emergency" service as a standard feature to all owners of OnStar who have already paid for the telematics hardware in the purchase price of their vehicle. Charge for the ancillary services (cell phone, information, etc). We all know what the right thing to do is. My guess is that these profiteers and scam artists dont know or care much about right and wrong. They care about getting your money. Dont let them have it.
