I have what will probably seem to be a question I should know the answer to, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I'm never afraid to be be the exception that proves the rule that there's no stupid questions :0

So my 99 9-5 2.3LPT has had a few driveability (e.g. stalling at stoplights, parking lots, etc.) issues lately, undiagnosed so far.

It's also been pinging for YEARS. The dealers have all told me it didn't ping, but my GREAT indy here in San Diego told me this week that the number of pings recorded in Tech 2 is extraordinarily high, so I now know what I've always suspected -- that the dealer techs were full of it :)

Anyway, he recommended that I consider doing this for the pinging (since I've been doing all usual suspect like using good high octane, changing plugs, running techron concentrate, etc.): replace the DI cassette (original, got ~80k miles now) and have a dealer update the T7 software.

What I'm trying to figure out is simply this: Does any of the software flash/upgrade the DI itself? My assumption is that the DI is pretty dumb and the ECU contains all the upgradeable code. But my indie wasn't entirely clear on this to me, and thought I should change the DI first, as if I didn't the code wouldn't be updated on a new DI if I bought one.

Anyone willing to take a moment to educate me? If it's as I think it is, my plan is to have a dealer do the ECU update and see if that solves the problem, and THEN buy a new DIC from EEuroparts and change it out after the fact.

Thanks!

Pat
