We bought an extended wty on my wife's Exploder. We got a deal bcz it was end of month and I didn't want to pay a lot so I got a 2yr warranty for $1200. It pretty much paid for itself in various repairs. Then just after it expired the tranny died. We were displeased.
My '96 9K came with a 2-yr warranty good to 114,500. Am closing in on the end of that one. The price for it was built into the price of the car, so I'm not sure what it cost (I figure maybe $1500), but it has bought me a new A/C compressor, a heater core and a front brake caliper, labor and all. I'm probably ahead of the game, especially considering I didn't have to do any of the work myself.
I like extended warranties but they have to be good ones. The companies vary widely. I'm starting to look for a 9-5 wagon to replace the Exploder and will probably get an extended warranty if I can't afford a CPO car. Since Saabs can be pricey to fix I kinda look at it as pre-paid repairs.
OTOH, if you can just manage to set some cash aside regularly for coming repairs the shock of sudden repair bills isn't so bad.
