This is too funny ( and you are to be congratulated for having a good ear.)
I posted the same thing 3 months ago when I got my new 9-5: for a premium system, it sounded a little flaccid to me. I was given the following advice:
To optomize the setup of the HK system, press the "on-volume" and the "WB" button at the same time and hold down. The system will go into setup on the disply. The first setting is default volume. The factgory preset level is 9. Set it to "24". It will be very loud for a few seconds, then will drop back to normal. Go ahead on through the setup routine and turn "loudness" to "off".
The sound system will sparkle. Apparently, setting the default volume up also affects the preamp out gain level- so the amplifier, which has been working pretty hard to drive all those speakers, works easier. At least this is what I am told. The proof is in the greatly improved sound. With this adjustment, it really is a /very/good sound system.
