To my ear, the HK Receiver is not as good as it's hyped to be. I find the rear (door) speakers very boxy and muffled sounding. It's a shame they seemingly use such cheap speakers there. I plan on replacing these.
I find that the with the loudness setting on there is too much bass and treble at moderate to "higher" volume levels. The sound seems more balanced with NO loudness on at these levels. Too bad there's not a button and not a programming routine you have to go through to change the setting to do this. Turning down the treble or bass, doesn't cut it for me.
At normal volume levels, with the loudness setting on, the system sounds pretty much OK, but on some sources it's fairly bass shy. At low volume listening levels (where the loudness contour SHOULD work), the treble boost outshines the bass boost, definitely making the system sound very bass shy.
My thinking is that they need to redesign the loudness contour to work ONLY at lower volume levels, NOT at higher volume levels, and with NO treble boost. The "clarity" of the tweeters is fairly fine as is and needs no assitance. The subwoofers are good, they just are hampered by the loudness programming and lack of ability to control them easily. And finally the stock rear door speakers are pretty terrible. They should be ashamed of installing these in such a fine automobile.
