I can't say if was a good choice. I would presume that it was well cared for after all it made it to 171K. However, they only last so long. Does it have any reords? If big ticket items such as the turbo and the transmission were replaced then I think it may not be so bad. However, I would really look over the cv axels and drive it over 70mph to see it there is a vibration. Some people have complained about a mysterious vibration and I have it too. I replaced the wheel bearings, brake pads, rotors, tires and had the wheels aligned. Nothing has cured the vibration that I feel in the accelerator and in the seat of my pants.
The timing chaing is an expensive repair. I not sure what I would have done. When they take the timing cover off that should give the tech an idea about the condtition of the engine. Good Luck.
