the exhaust stud (there are 7 on the 4 cyl engines) hold the exhaust manifold to the head...
the studs on the end (behind power steering pump) or behind the battery are subject to the most thermal expansion and often fail which cause an exhaust leak -- sometime it makes a sound like a tapping valve
depending on how bad the leak the oxygen sensor may get a bad reading and you definitely loose some pressure on the turbo which makes it less efficient...
if the stud breaks that will need replacing along with the gasket and the exhaust manifold may need to be machined flat or replaced if badly warped...
