That has been a pet peeve of mine an all my auto cars...I ALWAYS engage the parking brake prior to placing the tranny in park...esp. when I owned heavier cars (like a Suburban). All that weight against the tranny can't be good. I've noticed the same thing you describe in my '01 also, but what i did to lessen my fear was to engage the parking brake, place the car in Park, turn the car off (optional), then move the gear selector into neutral. On mine, there was no loud 'clunk' sound, (ie as if the transmission was 'leaning' against whatever plate is in there and then moved off). Seems like the brake does its job. It's a peeve of mine (drive my wife crazy with it), so like I said I always go 1) brake 2) Park or N. I go nuts when I see someone park their auto tranny car, just put it in Park and open up the door.. the car lurches forward against the tranny lock...I wince...poor tranny, even a Ford (!!!), doesn't deserve that kind of treatment...
