As I recall, the manual recommends 195/65/15's for deep snow and 205/55/16's for most winter conditions. Of course you'd need 15 inch wheels for the 15 inch tires. I don't know if the VW wheels would fit the 9-5.
Our dealer in Denver just sent us an offer for:
a) 4 Gislaved Nordfrost 2 185/65R15 on 6x15" steel wheels for $560 ("9-5 and 9-3 All Models except Viggen and Aero")-- seems a bit small for the 9-5's to me.
b) 4 Gislaved Nordfrost 2 205/55R16 on 6.5x16" 3-spoke alloy wheels for $820, center caps sold separately ("9-5 all models")
Both prices include installation. I was in last week and they didn't have the alloy package yet.
Costco has Michelin Artic Alpin 205/55R16's for $89/tire before a $50 rebate for 4 tires. Lifetime mount/balance/hazzard is $9/tire, seasonal swaps for $6/tire.
I'd love to hear from someone who's compared the Michelin, Gislaved, Haka, Nokian, and maybe the Blizzaks -- yes I know about the FAQ but it's a bit out of date. I've run Blizzaks on my '95 900 for the last 5 years here in Colorado and love their snow traction but not their tread life. The Nokian's and Haka's seem real popular on SAAB's and Volvo's around here. Can't find any info on the Gislaved, I've seen them but they don't seem to have a web site. FWIW I'm real close to putting the Alpin's on my 9-5 for this winter.
