I have two identical 2001 9-5 2.3's. I drive 60 (mostly highway) miles a day, round trip, switching the cars back and forth to try and evenly distribute the mileage between the two. I started only using 87 in both, then decided to try 89 in one and keeping 87 in the other. Based solely on the SID MPG readout, I think I may get 1-3 more MPG out of the 89, and I honestly don't sense any extra power. Very unscientific, I'm sure. But I'm coming to the conclusion that the price difference between the 87 (1.17) and the 89 (1.39) does not warrant the extra expense (28-30 MPG with 87, 30-32 MPG with 89).
And the folks with all the car knowledge on this BB (and some non-Saab ones I've frequented in the past) seem to be split as to whether higher octane is worth it -- there are those who swear the car will fall apart long before its time and those who feel it's all a marketing ploy. I think I've even seen scientists on this board arguing each side.
For me it was a side by side comparison -- two months running now. I'll probably give it another month or so, and then I may try the 92 or 93 vs. the 87 and see how that works out. But the fact that both my cars are only around 4,000 miles may also be causing bad results, since some say that 10k is a milestone for increased engine performance. If I did go back to 87 exclusively, I might retry my little experiment at 10k miles, though.
