Seems the fuel question has come up before and there is much material in here to sift through. My wife and I wondered about this since we got our wagon (5 speed) in late 99. Our dealer said performance and mpg would drop a bit with 87 as opposed to 89, and emissions would go up a bit. But not significantly. Yes, 90 is optimum, but the choices are 87-89-93 and we are not about to go to the trouble of mixing, and we settled immediately on 89 based on the manufacturer must know something.
Our performance is fine, we get 23 (or better) on my commutes in stop and go, and have seen as much as 35 highway.
A review of the prior discussions seemed to have some consensus that fuel economy is about 8% better with 89 octane. Now where we are-Philadelphia--89 octane has consistently been available for 8 or 10 cents per gallon more than 87, no matter what the underlying price was. Based on this, gas wouyld have to drop under $1 per gallon before it would be cheaper to fill with 87 octane. And--since the 89 is higher mpg--it must be polluting less since less is burned.
All that said, consider this--exactly how much could you save per year by buying 87 octane as opposed to bit less 89 octane? It cannot be a significant amount--especially compared to the price of the car!
