I have an '02 Aero wagon which seems to be in perfectly good condition mechanically, but it is painted midnight blue. While very sexy when new, the color shows all imperfections in the finish; and there are plenty of them since it has been garaged in New York City for most of its life. While I have the dings ironed out whenever I take it in for its scheduled maintenance, the truth is that the front and rear bumpers are in crummy shape and the paint is pitted in several places.
Do people still paint whole cars that have not been stolen or crashed? Is this a situation where only way down-market and super up-market work is available? I mean, I don't need some one who paints vintage Ferraris; but there must be someone who paints Mercedes unless people just throw them away when they lose their looks?
In short, is this technology so archaic that price and quality could both be a problem? I ask these questions because I want to drive the car for a long time to come. Besides, the cosmetics are now less subject to the indignities of the past since the car is no longer being garaged in the city and my wife has taken to driving a 4.2 litre A6.
The local Saab place told me I was nuts when I asked about this.
