When you say the paint is "pitted", are you referring to chips in the paint - i.e rock damage? If so, these can be repaired fairly well. You may in fact need to have those areas resprayed, and you should be able to find a reputable collision repair shop in your area.
But before doing that, I would seek out a good detailer in your area (check Autopia.org and ask for a referral if you don't know a good one). A high end exterior detail will cost about $200 (or around $40/hr depending on your area). Let them eveluate the car while you're present and set expectations reasonably. Also note points of concern to see how they might best be addressed. They have access to a wide variety of products, tools, and skills to bring your car back to nearly factory fresh. Some will do ding removal and minor paint repair as well.
A whole body repaint should be a very last resort. Overspray and orangepeel will likely be issues, as well as durability. A factory finish is produced in near sterile conditions, and is ususally baked at a higher temp than can be achieved - unless panels are removed. Reproducing a factory finish is a costly venture at best, and not likely worth it on a daily driver.
Good luck!
