Thanks to all of you for your input. Indeed, it seems as if the cloth is indestructible so long as you take modest care of it. Saw a 1999 9-3 with 75,000 miles on it the other day with the tan cloth seats, and I swear that the seats did not look over a week old. That "select cloth" that Saab used surely conforms to the most demanding European tolerances for durability. I so wish we succumbed to those values here, but so be it. The only 9-5 I have ever seen in cloth was that red wagon they used as an "offset head-on crash" demo at the auto shows in 2000.
I pray every night that the 2002 9-5 will be available in "select cloth." Saw the cloth/leather pattern on the 2002 9-3 the other day and the cloth does not seem nearly as nice as the old "select cloth".
I agree with most here, that cloth is the way to go. I seem to feel that from a resale perspective, if resale buyers had a chance to witness the perfect condition of the cloth on a used 9-5 with 70,000+ miles parked next to one with wrinkled, button-scuffed and sagging leather--with those little white lines in the dye cracks of the grey, that the cloth would present the obvious choice unless the buyer is dead-set on leather.
Saab buyers are a little different and I think cloth should be available and out there. Please, please on the 2002!
