What do they mean by bad timing belt? Did it break outright or is it intact but fraying, missing teeth, etc.? Did the tensioner or idle pulley break? Also, what's the car's price?
If the belt is broken, it's best to assume the valve train is munched, which will be a very expensive fix. But, if the price is right (say, $3k) and the rest of the car is in good condition, it could still be worth it. That said, if you have to replace the valvetrain it's a painful introduction to 9^5s.
FWIW I still enjoy mine ('99 SE V6) very much, and it's been a very dependable car.
