It happens now and then and in the scenario as you describe.
Have the shop drive the car until as hot as possible and instantly measure the resistance over pin 1 and 2 toward the CKP sensor with engine harness disconnected.
They should see a resistance of about 1000 Ohm or less (nominell value of 860 Ohm at 20°C) when the engine is really hot. If they wait too long to take the measurments (5-10 min) it's no use since the value probably have dropped down to normal by then.
If the resistance is way over 1000 Ohm, then the sensor is the most likely culprit.
A failing/failed CKP sensor very seldom leaves a fault code logged even though it is a specific code for that specific problem.
