Actually, road salt has practically nothing to do with exhaust system life. Not driving the car long enough on each trip to get the exhaust really hot has far more impact.
Exhaust systems rot from the inside-out, not from the outside-in. Gasoline is carbon and hydrogen, and when it burns the result is lots of CO, CO2 and H2O (water). The only way for the resulting water to get out of the engine is through the exhaust system in the form of steam. When you shut off the car the steam that's still in the exhaust system condenses into water and collects at the bottom of the pipes and at the low point of the muffler and just sits there, rusting the steel of the system. Additionally, when the car starts up the exhaust system is cold and causes lots of the exhaust water to condense before it can escape out the tail pipe - you see this all the time when you follow cars that have water dribbling out of the pipe as they go down the road.
All non-stainless exhausts will rot out and the exhaust systems of cars that take lots of short trips will rot out faster. To cure this, both the muffler and the pipes have to be made from stainless.
