That's what Mike Lynch would say: "It's all good."
And he's right. I own a '99 9-5 SE SportWagon (bought used last year), now with 80,000 miles, and it's perfect. Still looks and drives like a new car. After two used Saab 9000s, one of which I loved and the other of which was a dog, I LOVE my 9-5. They don't have all the bells and whistles of the high-end Japanese cruisers, and some people will always prefer BMW or Audi, but they have that distinctive Saab difference of being unique and well-designed.
Some on the board may tell you that 2004 was the year that "de-contenting" started. Little touches left out, such as the umbrella holders in the door posts or the weather-band on the radio. Don't worry about that, the 2004 9-5s are terrific. The earlier DIC/IDM failure problems have been solved (supposedly). Full-synthetic oil changed at 5K intervals should keep the i4 engines of that model year from sludging. Turbos and throttle bodies are a bit prone to need replacement down the road, but they may last for the life of the car. Both the manual and 5-speed auto transmissions are reliable.
More important than the model year is the particular 9-5 you buy. CPO (certified pre-owned) from Saab is nice insurance against any unexpected repairs. Regular oil changes is a good sign. That comes down to what actual cars you find to consider and your own car karma.
Though this board is a lighthouse beacon for problems and problem-solving, some posters here have already racked up in excess of 250,000 miles in their 9-5s with darned few vexing issues. Just ordinary maintenance and expected replacements.
Consider a SportWagon. Best of both worlds. And at least drive an Aero for the kick.
Good luck!
