Code Readers, motor oil, sparkplugs, and more..... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sun, 30 Apr 2006 15:25:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Yes, I spent some time at varous auto parts retailers today.
After spending over $100 at the Dealer about two weeks ago to diagnose and cancel a CEL, which reappeared one week after I repaired the diagnosed problem, I ordered a OBD-II code reader today. I initially tried to purchase one locally but variety was weak and prices were all over the map. I finally settled on the AutoXray "Code Scout" model and bought it on-line. Highly rated, made by a company who specializes in higher end diagnostic gear, upgradeable in the future over the internet (at additional cost), and currently on-sale with a $40 rebate too. I think my final cost will be around $80. Check prices carefully if you decide to purchase one - I initially ordered one at $169 before finding other e-tailers with sale prices and offering the factory rebate!
I also saw the newly labeled Mobil-1 "Turbo Diesel Truck and SUV" 5W/40 oil in a store today. The bottle label says it meets SL ratings (the M-1 0W/40 says it meets SM ratings) for gasoline engines and a bunch of ACEA specs which probably all apply to diesel engines since they began with the E prefix. Murray's Discount Auto sells it in the Truck Oil section of the store, far from the other Mobil-1 products.
I had a devil of a time finding NGK #PCBR6ES spark-plugs. I finally found them at Murray's after striking out at Advance Auto and AutoZone. Neither of the other chains even showed these plugs in their catalog for special ordering!
And what is the deal with oil filters? Is everyone deciding to stock ONLY the Fram brand? My stockpile of "nearly free" A/C PFL400A oversized filters is down to one. None of these on the shelf, not even with their new number PF59 (IIRC), very few A/C of any model, very few Motorcrafts, no Purolators, but walls of orange Fram boxes! It is a sad day when one is forced to buy oil filters on-line to obtain a reputable brand.
