Personally I don't like gimmicks.. but I must admit I do find the night panel useful when driving on a very dark road with no lighting.. as it really does seem to make you focus on the road. However; when driving in a well lit area I do prefer to leave the panel lit...
I understand your point concerning the apparent need to see the gauges before its too late...but think about it, what gauge failure specifically is your concern ? The fuel gauge would activate well in advance of empty, so no danger there. The speedometer obviously remains lit and the turbo gauge is really non issue. I wouldn't think the tach is a concern, or is it ?
So that basically leaves us the temperature gauge.. My understanding is that this is really set up to work like an "idiot light" anyway. It stays right in the middle and would only climb once the temperature exceeds a certain value outside of the safe/normal range just like an idiot light would.. In other words , it would not show the slow incremental climb to alert you of a temperature increase. This is based on what I recall reading in some previous posts... On the other hand, I also recall that the technician can program the gauge to operate like a normal gauge if desired...
