The Saab specific oil test program at oil medic is showing that synthetic blend oil changed at 5000 mile intervals is "safe". That said, the full synthetic oils tend to fare better on the tests. The main culprits are "oxidation and nitration", phenomena that result from the amount of blowby in the crankcase and are countered more by the additive package than the base oil.
Further, the oil cooler in 9-5s and '00-'02 9-3s (-03 9-3 CVs) is set 20 degrees hotter than earlier cars, presumably to keep sludge-forming moisture out of the oil. To me, this means that an XW-40 oil is indicated, rather than lighter oil. For synthetic blends, this points to 10W-40. Fully synthetic 5W-40 or 0W-40 are what I would (and in fact do) use.
