I am having tremendous issues with my Avon 550 all-seasons.
I believe that the stellar reviews from intital owners were due to the fact that the tire was new to the market and noone has had the chance to go 15-20K on these. The first 8,000 miles on these were amazing and I wanted to stock up on thirty three sets for the future. However, what I thought was a great tire simply fell apart after 10,000 miles. I have rotated the tire three times since purchase every 4K miles and am now nearing 13K miles of ownership. Tires are L-O-U-D, car is making extremely loud wob-wob-wob sounds at speeds, the vehicle experiences a slight shimmy at all speeds, they groan and growl at lower speeds and turning manuvers.
Yes, I have...
1-Checked my rims and they are true
2-Have had tires balanced on Hunter GP9700? machine
3-Had my wheel bearing replaced to see if this would help the noise. I was not sure as to the origin of this harmonic, loud noise at all speeds.
I am also aware of the inside cupping issue and have talked to Nick about about .06mm shims. Tires do not exhibit severe cupping at edge.
My car now wobbles down the turnpike, or as I call it does the commando-crawl, and sounds like a cross between a flying saucer and a F16 while in motion.
I have plenty of thread left on the tire and have only had them for 11 months or so. Recently I purchased a set of Conti WinterContact tires at a discount so I will be mouting these in late November. However, I cannot see myself putting these tires on my vehicle in the spring of 07.
I would advise against buying a tire that is so "young"; despite its bargain price. Further, I realize that Avon might be an offshoot of an established tyre manufacturer but it seems that there are kinks to be ironed out with this passanger model. Sucks, I gave them a chance at a great price but like other owners here have become disenchanted at exactly 10K miles after purchase.
Thanks for reading the rant!
