There REALLY is nothing that they can do... The problem is too much sulfur in the gasoline (and switching brands doesn't always help if they're all getting it from the same refinery). A lot of European cars suffer this "stinky exhaust" problem due to the compounds they use in the catalytic converters that improve emissions. The smell tends to go away after 5000 miles when the catalytic converter is broken in. Replacing the cat only resets you back to zero. Thus, there is NOTHING that they can do to "fix" this.
Taking your car out for an "Italian tuneup" on the highway tends to help the situation since the cat gets red hot and burns off the deposits. If you do a lot of in town driving, you're gonna be stinkin' up the joint! ;-)
Oh, and my Mom's Mercedes stinks too...
