Definitely dangerous... When it comes to STOPPING all four wheels play a part and you want the same tires all around to balance the grip. but don't believe us, put snows on your front tires and go for a drive... When you try and stop the fronts will have grip but the rears will slip, and the car will fishtail or even "swap ends" faster than you think.
Here's how I rate various factors for winter driving:
40% - proper tires (snow/ice tires, NOT "all season")
30% - driver experience in snow & ice
30% - vehicle dynamics (FWD, RWD, AWD) and weight distribution
Basically, you don't need AWD if you have FWD with the proper tires and some experience... Nothing is worse than some housewife in a big ole SUV with bald tires and no brains.
