All the synthetic oils and auto manufacturers agree that you can go longer than 5000 miles between oil changes with a quality filter. My 2001 Saab service manual recommends 7500 miles with full synthetic and I've seen longer. As some evidence, I've used Amsoil since I bought my car and a recent engine flush (my first) showed no crud whatsoever. I remember doing this years ago with another car that had 5000 miles changes with non-synthetic and the amount of crud that came out was astounding. Either way, using quality synthetic is the best way to go.
