I tried to search for information on this subject, but ended up with thousands of hits - mostly irrelevant - so here it goes (please bear over with me if the exact same question was among the thousands of hits):
I have a 2000 9-5 Aero with 123,000 km (about 77,000 miles) on the clock. During the first couple of years oil consumption was negligeable; since then it has settled on approximately 1 litre per 10,000 km (quite acceptable, I would say).
One month ago I had the 120,000 km service done and the head technician at my local Saab garage persuaded me to have the PCV mod done (I'm not sure which number that would be, but I presume it would be the latest one as of Jan 2007). Supposedly this mod would result in - among other things - a reduced oil consumption. Well, I subsequently went for a 2,800 km trip after which the oil barely reached the dip stick! I took the car directly to the garage where they added 1.75 L! That's 1,600 km/L (1,000 miles/quart)! The head technician steadfastly claims that this mod should reduce oil consumption. Is he pulling my leg, or what? His only suggestion at this point is to keep an eye on the oil consumption (but NOT to add any oil) and come back in 5 or 6 weeks when a Saab tech representative will be paying one of his regular visits; then, based on the service history of the car and the "new" oil consumption until then they'll decide what to do.
Does this sound reasonable?
Does anyone have an idea what may have caused this surge in oil consumption?
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Caspar
