I would suggest that the "online survey numbers" from Tire Rack are very valuable. In fact, that information is potentially more valuable than feedback from a couple of our fellow saabnetters--though both sources fall within the catagory of anecdotal evidence, in the case of the survey results from Tire Rack, you are talking about hundreds of thousands to millions of miles of anecdotal evidence (they even reference this in their charts). Nonetheless, your additional research into test track results is another helpful piece of information that can be added into the decison making process.
"Buying the most expensive tire is not necessarily the best or even the smartest option."
Agreed. People should look for a high-quality tire that meets or exceeds their needs in many important catagories.
One odd thought, your suggestion is that we be sure to follow the maunfacturers recommendation--Now, given the fact that Saab chose such a lousy OEM tire (the Michs), are we really to trust their judgement?
Further: "If your 9-5 spits you off the road or slams into the car in front of you shod with H rated all seasons, don't blame SAAB for your conscious decision not to get OEM spec tires. It's like tennis-when you play bad, it's the racket. In this case, it's the tires."
In this case IT MAY BE THE TIRES. You must acknowledge that in your analogy it just may be the lame excuse of a god-awful tennis player...
...and by extension a poor driver who isn't aware of LIMITATIONS (of the suspension, the brakes, the steering, his ability to handle the distractions of life, be they cell phones, screaming kids, alcohol, testosterone, etc.)
We have the base wagon. I wish that we had snagged one of the Aero wagons--if that were the case, I would be darn sure to buy Super Ultra Double-V rated tires so that I could drive like a freakin' maniac (and yet be as safe as a baby floating around on a single Michelin)....
