Oil filters

I've been researching oil filters for use on the 2.3L 4 cylinder engine (specifically the Aero, if that matters). After extensive searching of this board and the net in general I've come up with quite a bit of info but no real specific recommendations. It appears that Mobil1, ACDelco Ultraguard Gold (UG), and Amsoil have the best reputations. All of these are expensive, roughly $9-10. One interesting tidbit is that the Saab OEM filters appear to be the same as the ACDelco PF53 - the cheapest line of ACDelco filters. See this thread for some good info and links:

I would like to hear the opinions and experiences of other 9-5 owners. Any comments or info would be appreciated. Here are a few specific questions:
Are high-end synthetic filters worth the cost?
Is there any strong reason to stick with the Saab OEM filters?
What filter sizes fit the 9-5 2.3L engine? I'd like to use a larger filter than the OEM size if possible. I figure that more filter surface area = better performance. Another reason is that my local Pep Boys does not carry the Ultraguard Gold size UPF53 (i.e. the standard size for the 2.3L). I've read that it may be possible to use the larger sizes PF13 or PF20. Has anybody tried this? Any other recommendations?
Thanks!
