Based on Anders' idea of the AC valve, with the air conditioning on, even in normal conditions, the compressor puts a good few hundred pounds of load on the engine. Is it possible that with the excess pressure built up in the system that it was bogging down the engine enough to make it drive like that? I know after you park the car for a little while (getting lunch) after running the engine and AC when it's hot out that the engine compartment's temperature increases a ton without coolant flowing through the heads anymore. If the pressure from the AC comes out right on the very hot turbo it's going to make some smoke and be a little stanky, right? Based on the fact that the smoke came out the grille and front fenders I'd say by the location of the valve that this is pretty plausible. I guess you just have to look for nasty gunk all over the turbo now. And why you had too much pressure. Have you had the system serviced lately? Like new coolant or a recharge? If so, has it been that hot between the service and today?
