Been there 3X, although not with Saabs. In one case I got a used engine, in the other two cases I did a rebuild, but it was on a simpler engine (aircooled VW bugs). Today, on my Saabs, I'd buy a used engine and drop it in either of my 9Ks and would do the same in the 9-5. I'd do it for 2 reasons.

First, it's much less expensive to put in a used engine than it is to buy a new car, even if it's a used car, in equally good shape as the one you have. On a V6 you could do the chain and tensioners before you put it in and anything else worth doing based on the mileage on the "new" engine. Double flush the oil and coolant and you'd be good until your next maintenance cycle.

Second, since you've taken care of your car and like it, it's better than scrapping it (you'll only get about a grand for it) and then paying for a new(er) car. Sounds like you'd be out of the deal for about $2500 or so. Even at $3000, what are you going to get that would be equal to the 9-5 for $3K?

FWIW, if you scrap it, the wrecking yard will give you $1,000, put a used motor in it and sell it for $4-5K.

This kind of thing stinks, but it happens. Sounds like the dealer may have screwed up, but it will be hard to prove. Saab USA isn't being unreasonable. Real world: with 103K on your car they don't owe you a thing. Loyalty doesn't mean a thing to a manufacturer.
