Two things happen when you use Sport mode:
1. The throttle angle is increased compared to the same throttle opening in Normal mode. This provides better acceleration without having to put your foot on the floor.
2. The transmission shifts at a higher RPM providing more power during spirited driving.
Personally I like Sport mode for in-town driving as it makes the car more responsive in traffic situations when I need the response. But there is a conflict with the TCS system.
TCS is designed to control wheelspin of the front tires. It will cut torque to the drive wheels or apply the ABS to them in order to prevent the front wheels from rotating faster than the rears. When you drive in Sport mode the chance of wheelspin during acceleration is greater. TCS senses that and cuts the power to stop it. The result is a surging action where the car takes off aggressively from stop then feels like the power's been reduced (it has). It feels just like a fuel starvation problem when driving a carburetted vehicle.
The solution of course is to switch off TCS while in Sport mode. But how many people will remember to do that, let alone understand the strange interaction between the two modes?
