In 99, SE was a trim level, and it was available with two different engines. The V6 and 4 cyl SE were both available at the same time, and the change didn't occur until the 2000 model year to link the engines and the trim levels. I have a 99 4cyl SE, because I wanted a manual transmission. When we went shopping for a wagon last year, we ended up with a base wagon with the premium package that makes it the same as an SE, except the engine and the automatic dimming mirror. The 4 cylinder engine has been fine for me, I have driven the car fully loaded without any problems. I never drove the base engine with an automatic transmission, so I don't know how it compares. Where are you located, and do you already have a 99 you are looking at?
